Summer's End: Bandstand Repair Work Set to Begin

The restoration project for the Eastbourne bandstand will commence after the conclusion of the summer season, as confirmed by the council.

The Eastbourne Borough Council mentioned they were allocating £1.1 million for the restoration of the Grade II listed structure’s upper and lower shelters.

The local government stated that the bandstand, which is almost a century old, was severely compromised by winter storms, causing plaster and metal pieces from its steel support structures to frequently detach and fall down.

Councilmember Jenny Williams, who oversees heritage, culture, and the seafront, stated: "We are committed to maintaining the bandstand for both our local community and tourists. I am pleased to announce that the summer series of performances will go ahead as scheduled this year and next year."

The municipal office stated that in 2025, entry to both the lower and upper shelters will not be allowed; however, an estimated 530 individuals can still occupy seats or standing spots inside the ground-floor main arena viewing section.

A representative from the council has verified that during the summer, guests will have access to the bandstand situated along the central promenade as well as through the structure itself.

"The external colonnade will stay off-limits to visitors because of pre-existing structural concerns related to the deteriorating condition of the building’s structure," they further stated.

Over 100 performances have been scheduled for the summer, with just four events in October being canceled to guarantee that the preparations will be finished by 2026, according to the council.

Construction of safety barriers around the designated areas will commence next week.
