Spaun Seizes Control at The Players as Wind Ravages Round

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (AP) — As J.J. Spaun glanced up at the video screens surrounding the TPC Sawgrass during his round on Saturday at The Players Championship, he could clearly see the turmoil unfolding around him.

Will Zalatoris was tied for the lead and then his name was gone after an astonishing stretch of 9-over par on the last five holes. Lucas Glover fell back, and then he was there again, and then sliding. A double bogey-eagle-double bogey stretch will do that.

So imagine Spaun's relief when his final putt on a wild, windy, round-wrecking day swirled 360 degrees around the cup and dropped for a par. He had a 2-under 70, the best score of the final 10 groups, and a one-shot lead over Bud Cauley.

Spaun made his fair share of errors, though they were neither numerous nor significant.

I was playing some high-quality golf shots from the tee all the way through the green, putting myself in favorable positions without facing too much stress," Spaun stated. "I managed to keep the ball in play, mostly staying within the fairways. My aim was to get as close to the pin as possible, but only when we confirmed we had the appropriate club and ideal wind conditions; otherwise, our strategy would be to land the ball around 30 feet away and attempt to sink that putt.

I believe that's what it takes to perform well under extremely challenging circumstances, particularly on a golf course as demanding as this one.

What so many others wouldn't give for that.

In 2018, Cauley, who had suffered severe injuries from a car accident during the Memorial, made significant progress towards recovery. Despite teeing off two hours early and contending with strong winds, he managed to finish with three birdies over his final four holes, ending with a score of 66.

This placed him in the last group alongside Spaun and Glover, who concluded with a wild finish ending at 71.

“It’s pretty razor thin around here anyway," Glover said. “And then you add in 25, 30 miles an hour with some gusts, it shrinks things even more. I did a good job where I was missing for the majority of the day, and there was a couple holes where you just can’t miss.”

Spaun had a score of 12-under par with a total of 204. Both Glover and Alex Smalley trailed behind him by three strokes.

There was ample heartbreak, without even considering his scores in the fifties during the eighties, with the most difficult being an 85 from Emiliano Grillo. The Argentine began the second round only five strokes back but concluded it 19 shots away from the top spot.

When Zalatoris arrived at the 14th tee, he was momentarily knotted up with the leaders. However, he finished his round with a disappointing stretch of play, recording nine strokes over par across the last five holes: a quadruple bogey on the 14th hole, followed by a double bogey on both the 15th and the 17th where his ball landed in the water, and concluded with another bogey on the final hole. This brought his total score to 78.

In roughly one hour, he shifted from being tied for the lead to falling behind by 10 strokes.

Rory McIlroy managed to make a birdie on the last hole, which helped him recover from a score of 73 but still left him trailing by just four strokes.

Many of the missed opportunities came from errors close to the green instead of issues during the full swing," McIlroy stated. "I thought I struck the ball quite solidly and managed the trajectory effectively. It wasn’t off target at all. Given that the winds are expected to continue strong tomorrow, it was good to secure a birdie at the end to narrow the gap with J.J.

Scottie Scheffler, who had won two consecutive titles as the reigning champion, didn't fare well this time. He remained competitive for most of the game but encountered trouble when his shot off the pine straw located to the left of the par-5 16th fairway led him into a series of unfortunate events: first landing in one bunker, then moving to yet another bunker beneath a big tree, ultimately resulting in a bogey.

On the 17th hole, he missed a three-putt from a distance, resulting in a bogey and ended up hitting his ball into the water. On the final hole, he believed he had executed a flawless wedge shot but watched as it slid off the rear of the green. His total score stood at 72.

A year ago, Scheffler secured birdies on his final three holes to close a gap of five strokes and ultimately clinched victory with a score of 64. This time around, however, he double-bogeyed two out of the last three holes and found himself trailing by seven strokes.

Is that too much?

“I’m not dwelling on it excessively at the moment,” he stated. “Although I am somewhat annoyed with how it ended, I’m looking forward to starting strong tomorrow and improving the situation.”

The weather prediction included stronger winds along with sufficient rainfall; hence, the PGA Tour advanced the tee times to have players start in groups of three from both ends on Sunday morning.

Akshay Bhatia, who initially tied for the 36-hole lead with Min Woo Lee, struggled following a tough beginning. After starting with a birdie, he faced a series of setbacks including consecutive bogeys followed by a double bogey, which caused his ranking to drop significantly. Despite scoring 75, he remained competitive, only trailing by four strokes. Meanwhile, Lee managed a score of 78.

Collin Morikawa experienced a gradual decline with eight bogeys, resulting in a score of 77, which left him eight strokes behind.

The team at 7-under 209 comprised of Patrick Cantlay and Danny Walker exited on Friday night following a three-putt which appeared likely to eliminate him from the tournament. However, he managed to secure his spot right on the cutoff line, played among the earliest due to the impending winds, and delivered an impressive round of 66.

Walker only secured his spot in the tournament when Jason Day pulled out on Thursday morning. Currently, he finds himself among numerous competitors vying for the $4.5 million top prize from a total fund of $25 million. This win also comes with an additional benefit: a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
