Rune Stuns Medvedev to Reach Indian Wells ATP Final
Holger Rune from Denmark defeated Daniil Medvedev with scores of 7-5, 6-4, securing his place in the Indian Wells ATP Masters final on Saturday. This denied the Russian, who ranks sixth globally, a chance for a consecutive appearance in the championship match for the third time in a row.
Ranked 13th, Rune broke his seven-match losing streak in semifinals and is set to compete against either two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Great Britain's Jack Draper on Sunday.
Aside from everything else, this matters most," Rune stated. "We haven’t wrapped up our task completely, yet it’s incredibly rewarding. Competing against Daniil represents one of my biggest hurdles during the season. While I employed effective strategies, facing him remained extremely tough due to his relentless efforts and unwavering consistency.
During a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals, the 21-year-old Rune exhibited remarkable composure against Medvedev's renowned defense. He remained steady in long exchanges and kept the Russian player unsettled through an array of strokes, effectively utilizing his potent forehand when needed.
Following an initial series of service breaks in the first set, Rune was able to secure a crucial hold at 4-4, fending off a single break point. The game extended to deuce multiple times, reaching this stage six occasions, and stretched on for almost 11 minutes.

The second set was simpler following Rune's break of Medvedev at love to take a 2-1 advantage.
Following two tense points while serving out the match, Rune bounced back from being down 0-30 and endured yet another extended rally to secure a match point, sealing his win with a powerful forehand shot.
it’s all about determining the proper timing, and fortunately, my mobility is strong, allowing me to cover a lot of ground," rune stated. "it involves figuring out the appropriate speed and selecting the correct shots, since many players lose too many points against daniil.
He pushes you to want more, which is why I'm incredibly proud of finding the perfect pace.
Since Rune's rapid rise in 2022 culminated in defeating Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters finals, his progress has somewhat decelerated. However, he managed to reach his first tour-level final since the event in Brisbane back in January 2024.
