New York Mayor Eric Adams Loses Four Top Aides in Shocking Resignations

Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Four deputy mayors from New York City stepped down after Mayor Eric Adams worked with federal authorities to deport immigrants, bypassing the city’s status as a sanctuary location, according to an official statement on Monday.

The leading municipal authorities held virtual meetings with the Democrat on Friday and Sunday at his official mayoral residence. Politico , WNBC -TV and CNN reported.

Adams is seeking re-nomination in the June primary.

First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom, Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Chauncey Parker are set to leave their positions, according to confirmation from Adams' office.

The mayor also oversees several departments Including sectors such as education and police. Altogether, there are over 300,000 employees.

“I feel disheartened witnessing their departure, yet considering the present difficulties, I grasp their choice and hope for nothing less than success for them ahead,” Adams stated. “However, allow me to make this absolutely plain: The city of New York will continue progressing, much like it does each day.”

He mentioned that they will stay in their present positions to guarantee a "smooth handover." Adams commended their efforts.

Torres-Springer, Williams-Isom, and Joshi, the three deputies, released a joint statement addressing their resignations.

"As a result of the unprecedented occurrences over the past several weeks and to remain true to the vows we made to New Yorkers and our loved ones, we have reached the tough choice to resign from our positions," they stated.

Torres-Springer, who previously served under Mayors Mike Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio on issues related to economic development and housing, announced her intention to step down.

"With profound sorrow yet boundless thankfulness and respect for each one of you, I am sharing that along with DMO Meera Joshi and DMHHS Anne Williams-Isom, we will be leaving our positions within this administration," Torres-Springer stated in a communiqué acquired by Politico.

She added: "I have often said the phrase 'public service is an act of love' over the course of the last several months. I have tried to live every day in my long career as a public servant showing that love."

Parker in his own statement called serving with Adams "the honor of a lifetime" but didn't mention the situation.

These decisions came after the U.S. Department of Justice Department on Monday consented to momentarily suspend the criminal charges against Adams.

On Wednesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced her lawsuit against Governor Kathy Hochul , state Attorney General Letitia James And Mark Schroeder, who headed the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and failed to implement federal immigration laws, was called out. Adams was not mentioned by name.

On Thursday Adams stated that his city would collaborate in removing undocumented migrants.

Being a sanctuary city, New York City must restrict or decline to collaborate with federal authorities enforcing immigration laws, which includes refraining from making arrests and withholding shared data.

Adams had a meeting with Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, and stated he would utilize his executive authority to enhance cooperation between the city's law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities.

Appearing with Homan on Fox News on Friday, Adams said there was no "quid pro quo" to get the DOJ to drop the charges in exchange for his cooperation on immigration enforcement.

The DOJ guideline resulted in seven federal prosecutors resigning including Danielle Sassoon, who serves as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

On Sunday, Homan said it was "ridiculous" that letting Immigrations and Customs Enforcement into Rikers Island jail were related to the DOJ decision.

The mayor said he has no plans to resign, and was campaigning Monday in Brooklyn.

"Through all the negative headlines, rumors and criticism, I have remained clear: I'm not stepping down, I'm stepping up," he posted Sunday on X No matter what you come across, whether in reading or observing—let them desire to battle against me, yet my struggle is always on your behalf.
