49ers Trade Their Top Rushing Threat to the Vikings

The San Francisco 49ers have shifted focus away from another key player listed on their roster. As reported by report According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero from NFL.com, the San Francisco 49ers have traded running back Jordan Mason to another team. Minnesota Vikings For a 2026 sixth-round choice and a trade-up option in this year's draft that allows the 49ers to move up 27 positions in the sixth round.

Mason, a restricted free agent who received a second-round tender from San Francisco, is set to sign a two-year contract with the Vikings. This new agreement comes with $7 million guaranteed and can reach up to $12 million at most. As part of this transaction, it’s expected that the Niners will get some form of draft pick compensation.

Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason form the 1-2 combination in Minnesota. Last season, when the Vikings gave Jordan Mason some playing time, he rushed for 100 yards and scored a touchdown. This appears to be an excellent opportunity for Mason.

Since joining the 49ers as an undrafted free agent before the 2022 season, Mason has become a beloved figure among fans. Known for his powerful running style coupled with surprising speed, Mason carried the bulk of the rushing load during the previous season when Christian McCaffrey was sidelined due to injury. Over 12 appearances (with six starts), Mason amassed 789 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns from 153 attempts. His remarkable average of 5.2 yards per carry matched well with what he had achieved in earlier seasons where he played lesser roles.

According to Pro Football Talk, the 49ers stand to save $5.34 million by trading Mason. Given that this year's draft is expected to be rich with talented running backs, the team is probably seeking one who can support Christian McCaffrey in his first season. However, they would also want someone capable of stepping up as the primary runner should an injury sideline McCaffrey and require a dependable replacement for their offensive setup.

The 49ers have been working on slimming down their salary cap obligations during this off-season, apparently following specific directives from the team's owners. Although it makes sense that Mason could become one of the cap casualties due to the significant investment in McCaffrey, it continues an extensive reshuffling for a squad that hasn’t brought in much new talent thus far in the off-season.
