1968 Chevy Caprice Wagon: The Ultimate '60s Suburban Cruiser on BaT

  • This late-'60s station wagon is a massive wooden beast.
  • Beneath the surface, it boasts a powerful big-block V-8 engine.
  • It comes with plenty of options, including air conditioning, a third-row seat, and pretty much all-power features.

An episode from the initial season of That '70s Show Bob Pinciotti and Red Forman set out driving aimlessly, searching for their children with the intention of breaking up plans for a keg party. As Bob expresses doubt about finding them easily, Red responds with one of his classic quips: "Come on, they departed in what looks like a wood-paneled cruise ship. There’s no way we can’t catch up with them." Station wagons are few and far between nowadays, but in times of old, these colossal beasts dominated the suburban oceans.

A fine example is this 1968 Chevrolet Caprice That's available for purchase on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver It came with nearly every available feature checked off, and it boasts more wood paneling than your typical 1970s basement recreation area.

This specific instance was manufactured in Canada; it came from Quebec and ended up in London, Ontario. The initial owner was evidently affluent since the vehicle arrived equipped with power door locks, power windows (such as the rear gate window), a power-adjustable front seat, air conditioning, cruise control, additional speakers, and pop-up headlights.

That’s quite elaborate for a Chevy, but wait until you lift that massive hood—it only gets more impressive. Inside lies a robust 396-cubic-inch V-8 engine originally quoted at 325 gross horsepower, equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. The motor growls exactly as desired and sends power to the wheels via a three-speed automatic gearbox.

At this point, the odometer shows 64K miles; however, the actual mileage remains unspecified. The vehicle’s paint has been changed from its initial light golden hue to an attractive shade known as Autumn Metallic. This new color complements the large car perfectly, finished off with whitewall tires mounted on 15-inch rally-style rims.

A significant amount of work has been completed in this area, involving the replacement of the ceiling liner, air conditioning system, and shock absorbers. Additionally, the engine has undergone fine-tuning with new spark plugs and ignition wires, along with brake replacements. The interior boasts two large bench seats and an additional rear-facing third-row seating, providing ample space for everyone (and maybe even a keg). This luxurious vehicle is all set to cruise down the highway.

The auction concludes on Wednesday, February 19.
